Manufacturing Security and #IoT | @ThingsExpo @GlobalSign #IIoT #AI #M2M

The security needs of IoT environments require a strong, proven approach to maintain security, trust and privacy in their ecosystem. Assurance and protection of device identity, secure data encryption and authentication are the key security challenges organizations are trying to address when integrating IoT devices. This holds true for IoT applications in a wide range of industries, for example, healthcare, consumer devices, and manufacturing. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Lancen LaChance, vice president of product management, IoT solutions at GlobalSign, taught IoT developers how to introduce strong security elements into the manufacturing process, addressing the critical IoT security concerns but also accelerating time-to-market and reducing manufacturing costs. read more

Back-End Data Platform of #IoT | @ThingsExpo @Fuze #AI #SQL #DataCenter

A critical component of any IoT project is what to do with all the data being generated. This data needs to be captured, processed, structured, and stored in a way to facilitate different kinds of queries. Traditional data warehouse and analytical systems are mature technologies that can be used to handle certain kinds of queries, but they are not always well suited to many problems, particularly when there is a need for real-time insights. read more

Gating the IoT | @ThingsExpo #IoT #M2M #API #Security

Your car. My toaster. Our lights. The neighbor’s thermostat. With an average of 7.8 connected devices per home, according to recent surveys, there are twice as many “things” in the house as the average 3.14 people per household in the US in 2015. And all of them are “talking.” Not all talk to each other, yet, though the foundation for that is clearly laid out. But all of them talk to apps which talk to them over the Internet. When you or I interact with that app, we do so via HTTP (hopefully secured). Whether it’s via a native mobile app that uses APIs or a modern web app is irrelevant; it is safe to say that both do so via HTTP. read more

Architecture for Next Generation Digital Service Providers | @CloudExpo #NFV #Microservices #DigitalTransformation

Telcos embarking on a journey to adopt and exploit the NFV trend face a big challenge of existing legacy complexity, and a key message I have been marketing is that there already are best practices that can be reused from the Enterprise sector, especially from leading ‘digital natives' like Netflix and Linkedin. NTT Communications is a great example of this, employing the same ‘toolchain' of DevOps apps like Github, Ansible, Docker and Jenkins to do exactly that, better automate their own operations practices such as distributing NMS updates across multiple global data centers. read more

[HDGEM] MacBook Pro with a 13-inch screen and two Thunderbolt 3 ports

MacBook Pro with a 13-inch screen and two Thunderbolt 3 ports is more expensive than the Dell XPS 13, but it's the least-expensive Mac laptop that has all the power, connectivity, and features most people will need, in a package that will continue to serve you well for many years.
It offers great performance, two 40 Gbps Thunderbolt 3/USB-C ports, one of the best trackpads around, and a fantastic 2560×1600 Retina display with exceptional color accuracy, all in a lightweight aluminum body. The computer's operating system, macOS, is stable, easy to use, and free of bloat.

[HDGEM] Asus ZenBook UX305UA—it’s a fantastic ultrabook for its price.

Slim and light, it has great battery life, a good keyboard, and a reliable trackpad. It comes with the same processor and RAM capacity as the XPS 13, as well as a 256GB solid-state drive. The ZenBook lacks a touchscreen and keyboard backlighting, but these are reasonable sacrifices if you want a cheap, well-made ultrabook. It's the best computer you can get for a good price.

Microservices Recipes | @CloudExpo #Cloud #Containers #Microservices

As the Microsoft Azure CTO explains microservices represents a major inflection point for the IT industry - An Application Revolution Powered by the Cloud. They themselves are pioneering the approach through new products like ‘Cognitive Microservices‘. My personal opinion is that they can be defined as the next major milestone in software engineering ever since, well software was invented and run on mainframes, they are that much of a landmark. They will re-write the agenda of software practices across corporations right through university curriculum. One critical aspect of course is the commercial opportunity, both in terms of exploiting them and also the vendor marketplace, which has been particularly impressive both in terms of their innovative embrace of the model and also their speed to market with significant plays. read more

[slides] Government Cloud | @CloudExpo @Govplace #IoT #FedRAMP #ITIL

While many government agencies have embraced the idea of employing cloud computing as a tool for increasing the efficiency and flexibility of IT, many still struggle with large scale adoption. The challenge is mainly attributed to the federated structure of these agencies as well as the immaturity of brokerage and governance tools and models. Initiatives like FedRAMP are a great first step toward solving many of these challenges but there are a lot of unknowns that are yet to be tackled. In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, Majed Saadi, Chief Technology Officer at Govplace, focused on providing a quick update about the state of the cloud in the federal government with an emphasis on current trends and drivers. [video] @KevLindsay Keynote | @ThingsExpo @AdobeTarget @24Notion #IoT

More and more brands have jumped on the IoT bandwagon. We have an excess of wearables – activity trackers, smartwatches, smart glasses and sneakers, and more that track seemingly endless datapoints. However, most consumers have no idea what “IoT” means. Creating more wearables that track data shouldn't be the aim of brands; delivering meaningful, tangible relevance to their users should be. We're in a period in which the IoT pendulum is still swinging. Initially, it swung toward "smart for smart's sake," and many brands remain in that corner. But many brands are also gradually opting for more strategic approaches. They're taking a breath and stepping back to examine both existing and potential IoT experiences, asking themselves whether their products lend real value. Once we reach this goal, the implications for personalization are staggering. Consumers will expect devices they use and items they wear to be connected and add value to their lives. We'll ex…

[slides] Multi-Cloud Adoption | @CloudExpo @Cloudyn_Buzz #SDN #DevOps

Up until last year, enterprises that were looking into cloud services usually undertook a long-term pilot with one of the large cloud providers, running test and dev workloads in the cloud. With cloud’s transition to mainstream adoption in 2015, and with enterprises migrating more and more workloads into the cloud and in between public and private environments, the single-provider approach must be revisited. In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, Yoav Mor, multi-cloud solution evangelist at Cloudyn, examined the risks of sourcing IT resources from a single cloud service vendor, as well as the benefits to be reaped by adopting multi-cloud strategies. read more

[video] @HGSTStorage Approach to #Storage | @CloudExpo #SDS #DataCenter

Creating replica copies to tolerate a certain number of failures is easy, but very expensive at cloud-scale. Conventional RAID has lower overhead, but it is limited in the number of failures it can tolerate. And the management is like herding cats (overseeing capacity, rebuilds, migrations, and degraded performance). In his general session at 18th Cloud Expo, Scott Cleland, Senior Director of Product Marketing for the HGST Cloud Infrastructure Business Unit, discussed how a new approach is necessary, one that supports the attributes of the cloud with the millions of applications and users depending on it for their business and personal lives. Object storage is the millennial approach to cloud-based data storage, archival, retrieval and cost. Why? Because it delivers significantly higher data reliability and allows virtually unlimited expansion for storage. Providing secure, mobile access to sensitive data sets is a critical element in realizing the full potential of cloud computing. However, large data caches remain inaccessible to edge devices for reasons of security, size, format or limited viewing capabilities. Medical imaging, computer aided design and seismic interpretation are just a few examples of industries facing this challenge. Rather than fighting for incremental gains by pulling these datasets to edge devices, we need to embrace the immobile, heavy nature of this data by providing new opportunities for high-performance access and real-time collaboration. read more

Artificial Intelligence – Myth or Reality | @CloudExpo #AI #ML #DL #IoT

Way back in 1969, as a kid, I watched a very interesting movie – “2001: A Space Odyssey”. It was a science fiction where a super intelligent computer program HAL is in-charge of a mission to Jupiter which also carries several astronauts. The program becomes rogue and tries to kill all the astronauts. The hero survives and manages to disable the program. There is a lot more to the plot, but the fight between human and computer is still vivid in my memory. In 1969, such a scenario looked possible. Cloud Orchestration of @Pythian | @CloudExpo #DevOps #Puppet #Chef

Adding public cloud resources to an existing application can be a daunting process. The tools that you currently use to manage the software and hardware outside the cloud aren’t always the best tools to efficiently grow into the cloud. All of the major configuration management tools have cloud orchestration plugins that can be leveraged, but there are also cloud-native tools that can dramatically improve the efficiency of managing your application lifecycle. In his session at 18th Cloud Expo, Alex Lovell-Troy, Director of Solutions Engineering at Pythian, presented a roadmap that can be leveraged by any organization to plan, analyze, evaluate, and execute on moving from configuration management tools to cloud orchestration tools. He also addressed the three major cloud vendors as well as some tools that will work with any cloud. read more

IoT Can Battle Generational Gaps | @ThingsExpo #IoT #M2M #API #AI #ML

When new technology becomes available to the public, it is often met with trepidation by those who feel it’s unnecessary or even hindering. Typically, younger generations embrace technology while older people scorn it, but of course, this is not universal. The “Internet of Things” (IoT) or the growing trend to have internet connectivity in traditionally non-tech devices such as clothing, accessories, and home appliances, offers a lot of benefits to people of all generations. For example, being able to track your health data and fitness information is useful to young millennials trying to be fit, as well as older individuals who need to monitor specific health concerns. read more

[HDGEM] A single decision by a single developer.

August 2012, an automated trading platform, some testing code that sneaked into production servers and the "one line of bad coding" - a feature flag that was used to activate that code was re-purposed for another feature. When that flag was switched on, one server still had the old test code. That caused the trading algorithm to go haywire and issue a millions of trade instructions in mere 45 minutes, causing the company a $440 million loss, from which it never fully recovered.

What are the new priorities for the connected business? First: businesses need to think differently about the types of connections they will need to make – these span well beyond the traditional app to app into more modern forms of integration including SaaS integrations, mobile integrations, APIs, device integration and Big Data integration. It’s important these are unified together vs. doing them all piecemeal. Second, these types of connections need to be simple to design, adapt and configure. Plus, with the proliferation of IoT, there is an explosion in the number of devices requiring interconnection - both in terms of asset monitoring and spatial analytics. read more

DevOps #Monitoring | @DevOpsSummit #DevOps #IoT #APM #AI #ML #DL

Central to the idea of DevOps is collaboration between all of the teams involved in IT applications and infrastructure. Developers, Operations, Quality Assurance, Security, and more, all have stakes in the delivery of a product or service. So, what does collaboration mean when it comes to monitoring in the world of DevOps? In the past, different teams involved in creating or maintaining an application would first finish their portion completely before passing it on to the next team. For example, the Development team would first write code for the entire app, or specific features in the app, before passing it to the Quality Assurance (QA) team. The QA team would then do their testing and analysis before sending it forward to Operations, and so on. read more

Disrupting Application Architecture | @CloudExpo #SaaS #PaaS #Cloud #AI #ML

A revolutionary change in the industry was the foundation of cloud on the automation of virtualization technologies. Initially it was meant for infrastructure, but with the advent of new and innovative cloud services it has crossed the boundary of Infrastructure and invaded the application space. The concept of ‘as a Service' model has three pillars: IaaS (Infrastructure as a Service), PaaS (Platform as a Service) and SaaS (Software as a Service). Over a period of time cloud services have grown and diversified to the extent that clubbing the services into these three pillars is not only difficult but unattainable. That's the reason none of the public cloud providers classify their services in ‘as a Service' model category. read more

[slides] #LowCode and #NoCode Platforms | @ThingsExpo @Metavine #AI #ML

The Internet of Things will challenge the status quo of how IT and development organizations operate. Or will it? Certainly the fog layer of IoT requires special insights about data ontology, security and transactional integrity. But the developmental challenges are the same: People, Process and Platform and how we integrate our thinking to solve complicated problems. In his session at 19th Cloud Expo, Craig Sproule, CEO of Metavine, demonstrated how to move beyond today's coding paradigm and share the must-have mindsets for removing complexity from the development process, accelerate application delivery times, and ensure that developers will become heroes (not bottlenecks) in the IoT revolution. read more
