[session] #DeepLearning, Trading & #FinTech | @CloudExpo #BigData #AI #ML

Deep learning has been very successful in social sciences and specially areas where there is a lot of data. Trading is another field that can be viewed as social science with a lot of data. With the advent of Deep Learning and Big Data technologies for efficient computation, we are finally able to use the same methods in investment management as we would in face recognition or in making chat-bots. In his session at 20th Cloud Expo, Gaurav Chakravorty, co-founder and Head of Strategy Development at qplum, will discuss the transformational impact of Artificial Intelligence and Deep Learning in making trading a scientific process. This focus on learning a hierarchical set of concepts is truly making investing a scientific process, a utility.

Engineering the Chaski Relay: A Touchscreen Game at the National Museum of American Indian

On visiting The Great Inka Road: Engineering an Empire exhibition at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of the American Indian, it is impossible not be taken by the sheer scale of the Inka Road. Qhapaq Ñan, or the Road of the Inka, is a 25,000-mile long road system that fed the rapid expansion of the Inka Empire in the 14th and 15th centuries. It connected distant towns and settlements in the Andes, snaking up and down mountains, bridging impossible valleys, and traversing lush agricultural fields and terraces. In 2014, the road was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.

The Great Inka Road moved goods and people, of course, but it was also a vital conduit for communication. The system stretched north and south along the Andes, from modern-day Ecuador to the middle of Chile. Pre-internet, pre-telephone, pre-tattooed bike courier, information was passed through a network of chaskis—young men who acted as long distance relay runners. Each chaski ran 10 to 15 miles to the next chaskiwasi, a house where the next runner awaited. Messages were relayed verbally (because the Inka had no written language) and small parcels were exchanged. The new chaski would then speed off to complete his leg of the trip. In this manner, communications passed rapidly between far-flung cities across the Andes mountain range. A message could be relayed over 150 miles in a single day.

Photo of The Chaski Relay as it appears in the gallery.

The interactive team at the National Museum of American Indian saw the chaski story as an opportunity to bring additional engagement to the museum gallery. An underlying goal of the exhibition design was to balance traditional content elements, like museum artifacts, maps, and text labels, with interactive experiences. To this end, The Great Inka Road: Engineering an Empire features several digital interactives, including a dining table-sized multi-touch surface that presents a 3D rendering of the ancient city of Cusco and encourages visitors to explore and unlock deeper stories. The exhibition and its interactive elements are fully bilingual, in English and Spanish.

The team identified the chaski story as a candidate for interactivity and gamification. The story was attractive not only because it could spur a visitor’s curiosity, but because the rapid communication system supported the main message of the show, that “this was a sophisticated society that used sophisticated engineering methods to manage a very complicated and wide-ranging society,” said Daniel Davis, manager of the museum’s media group.

Preliminary ideation led to a slew of ideas, including a physical relay in the exhibition space involving check-ins and barcode readers, and other first-person approaches where the player took the role of a chaski. But after consulting with EduWeb, the development partner on the project, the concept quickly matured and simplified. Instead of becoming a chaski, the game would be about managing chaskis from a bird’s-eye perspective.

Screenshot from the game.

With a more focused idea and funding from the Electronic Software Association, the team set out on prototyping and development. Dubbed The Chaski Relay, the game concept was very simple: the player manages a network of chaskis and is responsible for delivering messages of varying urgency between cities across the vast Inka empire. Using the touchscreen, the player traces the most efficient city-to-city route for the chaskis to follow on a map. Points are awarded for picking expedient routes – ones that are shorter and require less chaskis. Tracing an inefficient or stray route could lead to late deliveries, or worse yet, chaskis falling off cliffs or being eaten by jaguars.

The simplicity of the game concept elicited healthy skepticism and a few furrowed eyebrows among the team. To test it, EduWeb built a fully functional prototype in Unity, a video game engine. The application was loaded onto a touchscreen display and rolled into a public gathering space in the museum. Preliminary testing with visiting grade-schoolers revealed that the overall game concept was on track.

Photo of student user testing in the galleries.

“We tested it with second through fourth graders and were kind of shocked that, by and large, they were into it. At which point we said, ‘we don’t really have to make this any more complicated,’” recalled Erin Weinman, applications manager at the museum. Said Daniel Davis, “It’s a game that one might not do sitting on their couch at home, but it works well within the context of the galleries and a museum visit.”

Image of a 3-D character model used to illustrate and animate the chaski runners used in the game.

With the general concept affirmed, the team focused on refining design and gameplay elements, conducting six rounds of testing with a fully functional prototype. Each test was done with museum visitors in the gallery. Findings from each round sparked a punch-list of iterations, made directly in Unity to amend the prototype for the next round. Refinements included simplifying and enlarging the handoff animation so that players better understood that chaskis were relay messengers, improving touchscreen interactions to make them more predictable, and fixing technical bugs.

A summative evaluation shows that The Chaski Relay is engaging visitors and fulfilling its learning objectives. Visitors play an average of four minutes, which is no small accomplishment in a gallery setting where people are moving from one display to the next. Players appeared to absorb the game’s learning objectives, with 89% able to demonstrate knowledge about the Inka Road. Most players interviewed (30%) mentioned the importance of the road to the Inka, and some (19%) talked about the complexity and sophistication of the road system.

While group play was not a primary objective of the game design, the team feels that socialization is one opportunity for improvement in future projects. Simply using a larger screen to allow multiple players to participate could enhance cooperation and social interaction. Overall though, the team is very pleased with the outcomes, and the game is regularly busy. Said Daniel Davis, “We were really fascinated to see how a simple game can be a really effective experience.”

What Does It Mean to Be an Entrepreneur? | @BigDataExpo #BigData #BusinessIntelligence

My daughter is taking a class on entrepreneurship in her senior year of high school (yep, that’s the Silicon Valley for you). She loves the class, the energy of the teacher, and the creativity associated with the subject. As a result, we have had several conversations about what does it mean to be an entrepreneur. While I am sure there are folks more qualified than me to define what it means to be an entrepreneur, I’ve run into enough of those folks over the years to believe that I have a pretty decent perspective.

Can Alexa Lie? | @ThingsExpo #ML #IoT #M2M #ArtificialIntelligence

There was a recent tabloid piece featuring a video of a woman asking Alexa if it was connected to the CIA. At the time, the Echo Dot she was speaking to did not respond to the question. She asked a few times, and each time the Echo was silent. Conspiracy theorists weighed in. It was an amusing video, but the Daily Mail’s clickbait headline raises a legitimate question: Can Alexa lie? According to Amazon, you can “use the Alexa Voice Service (AVS) to add intelligent voice control to any connected product that has a microphone and speaker.” Alexa uses machine learning to help it recognize what you say (Automatic Speech Recognition) and understand the question (Natural Language Understanding) and then routes your information as requested.

Java vs. Python: Which One Is Best for You? | @DevOpsSummit #APM #Java #Python

Few questions in software development are more divisive or tribal than choice of programming language. Software developers often identify strongly with their tools of choice, freely mixing objective facts with subjective preference. The last decade, however, has seen an explosion both in the number of languages used in production and the number of languages an individual developer is likely to employ day to day. That means that language affiliations are sometimes spread more loosely and broadly across different codebases, frameworks, and platforms. Modern projects and modern developers are increasingly polyglot—able to draw on more languages and libraries than ever before. Informed choice still has a part to play.

Digital Transformation: Two Words Don’t Fit All, or Do They? | @CloudExpo #Cloud #DigitalTransformation

Digital transformation. It’s only two simple words, but in the increasingly complex, customer-centric enterprise IT landscape, it’s a phrase that carries multiple meanings — to the point where some would probably observe, tongue-in-cheek, that it doesn’t mean anything anymore. It’d be hard to argue that “digital transformation” hasn’t been pushed into buzzword territory by those of us who write about business IT, but I feel like that speaks more of the concept’s genuine relevance and importance to the success of today’s digital first enterprises than just simple hype. The sports media talks about the Golden State Warriors, Cleveland Cavs, and their superstar players a lot, too.

A Complete Redesign with You in Mind

We’re excited to launch a complete redesign of USDA.gov featuring stronger visual storytelling components, a more modern user-experience with easy to find services and resources, and to top it off, a completely mobile-friendly design.

Through careful planning, thoughtful design, and a primary focus on user experience and usability, we’ve taken the best of government and industry expertise and put it into creating our new website.

Screenshot of the new USDA.gov website.

This has been a year-long project, but to do this right, we wanted to make sure we tapped into every possible resource. Throughout the year, we conducted workshops to help define our audiences and develop a new way of organizing the information that matters most to you. We looked at every piece of content and took a ground-up approach to how we manage and deliver that information online, conducting user-testing to refine our strategies, and working with industry experts to bring those plans to reality.

The result was Drupal, our new Web Content Management System. We created a framework for an Enterprise-wide platform that allows for all of USDA websites to share and grow together and to manage content in a way that breaks down internal silos and optimize collaboration.

One of our first case studies testing the Drupal system, was with the creation of the New Farmers website. At the same time, we were working to redesign our website, the U.S. Federal Web Design Standards were being drafted, so, we were able to take those guidelines and build the New Farmers website, a one-stop resource to help those who want to begin farming. The New Farmers website paired with Drupal proved to be a great launchpad for what was to come, the redesign of USDA.gov.

Using Drupal, we created a completely responsive website, which means what you see on your desktop computer is the same content you’ll see on your phone or tablet, not just a “mobile version.” Give it a try. If you’re on a computer, grab the corner of your browser window and change the size of that window to make it smaller. You’ll see the website shift around and recreate itself to fit into what you would see on your phone or tablet.

This is just the beginning so we need your help to making us better. While browsing USDA.gov, scroll to the footer and look for the feedback link. Please send us comments if you encounter an error or have suggestions for improving our website. We’d love to hear from you as we continue to improve the website for years to come.

[HDGEM] Serverless computing lets you build scalable and cost-effective applications that scale up or down automatically without the need for provisioning, scaling, and managing servers.

You use AWS Lambda to run your application's code and Lambda triggers your code in response to events, such as HTTP requests or changes to data in an Amazon S3 bucket or Amazon DynamoDB table.

You are charged for the duration it takes for your code to execute and the number of times your code is triggered. Since Lambda scales precisely with the size of your workload, you never pay for idle compute.

AWS also provides a set of fully managed services that you can use with Lambda to build serverless applications.

These services let you add database and storage tiers for your application or manage connections and messages from mobile and IoT devices. You can use these services together with Lambda to build applications that don't require provisioning and maintaining servers or administering databases. You also no longer need to worry about application fault tolerance and availability. Instead, AWS provides all of these capabilities for you, allowing you to focus on product innovation and get faster time-to-market.

[HDGEM] AWS Lambda automatically runs your code without requiring you to provision or manage servers.

No Servers to Manage, Just write the code and upload it to Lambda.

Continuous Scaling

AWS Lambda automatically scales your application by running code in response to each trigger. Your code runs in parallel and processes each trigger individually, scaling precisely with the size of the workload.

Subsecond Metering

With AWS Lambda, you are charged for every 100ms your code executes and the number of times your code is triggered. You don't pay anything when your code isn't running.

With serverless computing, your application still runs on servers, but all the server management is done by AWS.

At the core of serverless computing is AWS Lambda, which lets you run your code without provisioning or managing servers. With Lambda, you can run code for virtually any type of application or backend service, and it takes care of everything required to run and scale your code with high availability.

[HDGEM] Spark - A micro framework for creating web applications in Java 8 with minimal effort

Built for Productivity

Spark Framework is a simple and lightweight Java web framework built for rapid development. Spark was originally inspired by the web framework Sinatra, but it's intention isn't to compete with Sinatra, or other similar web frameworks in different languages. Sparks intention is to provide a pure Java alternative for developers that want to (or are required to), develop their web application in Java. Spark is built around Java 8's lambda philosophy, which makes a typical Spark application a lot less verbose than most application written in other Java web frameworks.

Spark focuses on being as simple and straight-forward as possible, without the need for cumbersome (XML) configuration, to enable very fast web application development in pure Java with minimal effort. It's a totally different paradigm when compared to the overuse of annotations for accomplishing pretty trivial stuff seen in other web frameworks.

[HDGEM] AWS Serverless Application Model (AWS SAM) allows you to easily create and manage resources used in your serverless application using AWS CloudFormation.

You can define your serverless application as a SAM template - a JSON or YAML configuration file that describes Lambda function, API endpoints and other resources in your application.

Using nifty commands, you upload this template to CloudFormation which creates all the individual resources and groups them into a CloudFormation Stack for ease of management. When you update your SAM template, you will re-deploy the changes to this stack. AWS CloudFormation will take care of updating the individual resources for you.

[HDGEM] Amazon Connect is a simple to use, cloud-based contact center service that makes it easy for you to deliver better customer service at lower cost.

This new service from Amazon Web Services is based on the same contact center technology used by Amazon customer service associates around the world to power millions of customer conversations. Setting up a cloud-based contact center with Amazon Connect is as easy as a few clicks in the AWS Management Console, and agents can begin taking calls within minutes.

Amazon Connect's self-service graphical interface makes it easy for non-technical users to design contact flows, manage agents, and track performance metrics – no specialized skills required. The service also makes it possible to design contact flows that adapt the caller experience, changing based on information retrieved by Amazon Connect from AWS services, like Amazon Redshift, or third-party systems, like CRM or analytics solutions. You can also build natural language contact flows using Amazon Lex, an AI service that has the same automatic speech recognition (ASR) technology and natural language understanding (NLU) that powers Amazon Alexa.

Amazon Connect integrates with a broad set of AWS tools and infrastructure so you can record calls in Amazon S3, use Amazon Kinesis to stream contact center metrics to Amazon Redshift or an external data warehouse solution, use Amazon QuickSight for data visualization and analytics, and use AWS Directory Service to allow agents to log into Amazon Connect with their corporate credentials. Amazon Connect also integrates with leading CRM, Workforce Management, Analytics and Helpdesk offerings, so you can embed the Amazon Connect agent experience into the application that your agents already use.

Deciding to Insource or Outsource the SOC | @CloudExpo #Cloud #Security #Analytics

These days attacks are becoming more sophisticated and more common. Mobile devices, cloud computing and the Internet of Things have increased the number of access points that must be secured. To complicate matters, CISOs are been directed to secure system without compromising the seamless experience that customers expect across channels, and if the organization is in a regulated industry, compliance issues likely increase the team’s workload. To best detect threats and respond to incidents quickly, many organizations decide they need a security operations center to provide proper protection and continuous prevention. Then they must decide whether to build an internal Security Operations Center (SOC) or outsource.

Is #Blockchain Enabler of Data Monetization? | @CloudExpo #BigData #FinTech

Special thanks for the help on this blog to the coolest, most hip group of industry experts that I have ever met: the Pathfinders. The Pathfinders is an elite forces group of master system engineers inside of Dell EMC who tackle our customers’ most difficult and inspiring challenges. I am honored to be part of that club! Suppose an autonomous vehicle learns of a more efficient route and wants sell this knowledge to other autonomous cars for a fee (using blockchain to handle machine to machine transaction). Suppose the autonomous vehicle could start to monetize itself; to self-fund its own operations and the acquisition of goods and services such as gas, repairs or vehicle upgrades (using blockchain to conduct commerce). Now suppose the autonomous vehicle could couple real-time analytics of vehicle performance and maintenance with real-time bidding for maintenance servicing and replacement parts (blockchain inserted again). Lastly, think “intelligent” vehicle depreciation and salvage value optimization where the autonomous vehicle continuously scours used car and auto parts markets for vehicles in need of older chassis, transmission and electrical components (again leveraging blockchain).

What Are Containers? | @DevOpsSummit #DevOps #Docker #Kubernetes

End-user experience is everything when it comes to facilitating workplace productivity. You could deploy or develop the most powerful applications anyone has ever seen-but they won't do any good if they offer a poor experience. This is a major reason why applications are moving to SaaS, PaaS and IaaS cloud computing models. The cloud simplifies applications on the back end, which translates to smoother end-user experiences. But as cloud apps integrate more services and user bases diversify, IT has to do more to streamline application platforms. Enter container technology.

[HDGEM] Security researchers from Cybellum have discovered another technique cyber criminals can use to take over your computer.

The zero-day attack called DoubleAgent exploits Microsoft's Application Verifier tool, which developers use to detect and fix bugs in their apps. Developers have to load a DLL into their applications to check them, and Cybellum's researchers found that hackers can use the tool to inject their own DLLs instead of the one Microsoft provides. In fact, the team proved that the technique can be used to hijack anti-virus applications and turn them into malware. The corrupted app can then be used to take control of computers running any version of Windows from XP to the latest release of Windows 10.

[HDGEM] Got SHA-1 collision

Git stores all data in "objects." Each object is named after the SHA-1 hash of its contents, and objects refer to each other by their SHA-1 hashes. If two distinct objects have the same hash, this is known as a collision. Git can only store one half of the colliding pair, and when following a link from one object to the colliding hash name, it can't know which object the name was meant to point to.

Two objects colliding accidentally is exceedingly unlikely. If you had five million programmers each generating one commit per second, your chances of generating a single accidental collision before the Sun turns into a red giant and engulfs the Earth is about 50%.

[HDGEM] IntelliJ IDEA 2017.1 is available for download!

In addition to many important bug fixes, this massive update brings lots of improvements to supported languages, frameworks, and built-in tools.

Java 9: The latest builds of JDK 9 are fully supported, with assisted project import and coding assistance for editing module declarations. Built-in inspections validate module declarations and provide quick-fixes for adjusting project dependencies.
Java 8: Quick-fixes that help migrate for loops to Stream API calls have been improved and now support more sophisticated scenarios. We've also added a quick-fix that turns Stream API calls back into for loops, which is handy for debugging or exploring code.
Async-aware debugger: Async stacktraces is a new feature that substitutes parts of a stack trace related to asynchronous code execution with data captured from where that code is invoked. This helps you focus on what you're debugging. An improved Smart Step Into also supports asynchronous code and lambda expressions running on other threads.
Better VCS: The Log panel for Git and Mercurial has new display options, the Diff dialog gets an option to Ignore imports and formatting, and File History for Git is now faster. We've also added Favorite Branches and Speed Search to the Branches popup for Git.
Search: The Find in Path dialog, which previously had added a Preview tab, has been reworked from the ground up and now shows instant results in the first place. What is more important, now you can open any selected result in the Editor simply by pressing Enter.
Spring: Spring Testing has been updated to support Spring Boot 1.4.3, and the upcoming Spring 5.0. Spring Data tools are updated to version 2.0 (including MongoDB, Redis, Solr, KeyValue, Gemfire, Apache Cassandra, REST, Neo4j, Couchbase, and Elasticsearch). There's also a new Data tab in the Spring tool window which brings better repository navigation.
Gradle: Support for Composite Builds is much improved with the detection of includeBuild in Gradle settings and automatic project configuration.
Kotlin 1.1: Among other things, the new version of this JVM language introduces coroutines—the new non-blocking asynchronous API, and fully supports compilation to JavaScript. This means you can use Kotlin strings, collections, sequences, arrays and other core API in your JavaScript apps.
JavaScript: We're bringing first-class support for Vue.js, lots of new code style options for JavaScript and TypeScript, faster and more reliable integrations with Angular, ESLint and TSLint (including language service support and TSLint-powered quick-fixes). Plus, simpler editing of project dependencies in package.json with package names and versions completion and easier running of Mocha and Jest tests with the new Run gutter icon that also displays test state.
Database tools: IntelliJ IDEA now allows you to transfer table schemas and data between any two databases (yes, even from MySQL to Microsoft SQL Server and back).
Emoji: The editor now supports Unicode emoji characters (handy for writing comments).
Android Studio 2.2.2: This update includes all changes from Android Studio 2.2.2.
Docker: The Docker plugin now supports Docker for Mac and works via "unix://".
Windows: The 64-bit installer for Windows lets you give IntelliJ IDEA more RAM.
