[HDGEM] Home sales dwindle

Housing starts rose by 0.6% in February compared with the previous month.

In urban centres, they dropped by 4.7% in the multiple-dwelling segment, but shot up by 12.1% in the single-family segment.

The trend according to the six-month moving average ticked up slightly after remaining stable for several months. As for home sales, they dipped by 1.3% in January, month over month. Sales fell in nearly half of the markets, especially in Canada's three largest urban centres: Metropolitan Toronto, Greater Vancouver and Montreal. The volume of sales posted in January, when the new rules making it more difficult to qualify for a mortgage loan came into force, was barely higher than that seen in November.
