[slides] Why Composable Infrastructure? | @CloudExpo @HTBase #SDN #DataCenter

yperConvergence came to market with the objective of being simple, flexible and to help drive down operating expenses. It reduced the footprint by bundling the compute/storage/network into one box. This brought a new set of challenges as the HyperConverged vendors are very focused on their own proprietary building blocks. If you want to scale in a certain way, let’s say you identified a need for more storage and want to add a device that is not sold by the HyperConverged vendor, forget about it. This meant that up to now the HyperConverged vendors were in charge of the requirements. read more

Hard Decisions in #DigitalTransformation | @ThingsExpo #AI #ML #DX #IoT #SmartCities

How can an organization with decades worth of accumulated ERP customizations and configurations, IT systems and customized software applications digitally transform fast enough to keep up with the rapidly changing behaviors of digital customers? That is a hard question most organizations are wrestling with today. Often complex custom IT environments served a purpose in a past era, but today where IT speed and agility are required, they serve as anchors restraining an organization from moving forward and digitally transforming fast enough to compete. read more

Automation Is not DevOps | @DevOpsSummit #CD #Agile #DevOps

A few years ago, if you would have asked me to define DevOps, my answer would have sounded something like “Mumble mumble automation, mumble, automation, mumble mumble, infrastructure-as-code, mumble mumble, strategery.” Thinking that DevOps equated to automation had mostly to do with the fact that most of the DevOps people I talked to and articles I read really only spoke about automation with only indirect references to anything else. read more

[session] #DevOps vs SRE vs Cloud Native | @DevOpsSummit @RackNgo #Serverless #CloudNative

DevOps is under attack because developers don’t want to mess with infrastructure. They will happily own their code into production, but want to use platforms instead of raw automation. That’s changing the landscape that we understand as DevOps with both architecture concepts (CloudNative) and process redefinition (SRE). Rob Hirschfeld’s recent work in Kubernetes operations has led to the conclusion that containers and related platforms have changed the way we should be thinking about DevOps and controlling infrastructure. The rise of Site Reliability Engineering (SRE) is part of that redefinition of operations vs development roles in organizations. read more

Shedding Light on Underserved Users through Research

How user interviews helped spotlight the needs of a previously forgotten groupWe may not like to admit it, but, most web services or sites have users that (for whatever reason) just aren’t well understood—and in turn, not well served. Conducting user interviews and making sure you get good participation from those groups can help you accomplish several things: you get a better understanding of a once mysterious user group, you show members of that group that you are trying to understand them, and you raise awareness among management that this user group is worthy of your attention. I recently completed a broad set of user interviews with each of my application’s user groups, and while I didn’t mean for these interviews to completely change the way we viewed our customers and how we supported them, they did.Gajus/iStock/Thinkstock Learning More About the UnderservedSets of users generally do not become underserved by accident. [session] Open Source Tool Chains | @DevOpsSummit @CAinc #CD #DevOps #ContinuousTesting

The goal of Continuous Testing is to shift testing left to find defects earlier and release software faster. This can be achieved by integrating a set of open source functional and performance testing tools in the early stages of your software delivery lifecycle. There is one process that binds all application delivery stages together into one well-orchestrated machine: Continuous Testing. Continuous Testing is the conveyer belt between the Software Factory and production stages. Artifacts are moved from one stage to the next only after they have been tested and approved to continue. New code submitted to the repository is tested upon commit. When tests fail, the code is rejected. Subsystems are approved as part of periodic builds on their way to the delivery stage, where the system is being tested as production ready. The release process stops when tests fail. The key is to shift test creation and execution to the left, rather than creating tests after development is complete. As cod…

Five Reasons Why AI Is Suddenly Accessible | @ThingsExpo #AI #ML #IoT #M2M

In recent years AI has grown significantly and become a substantial area of business investment. What has changed, and how does this affect you? For a long time, artificial intelligence was pure science fiction, relegated to books, television and movies—and you don’t need us to tell you that we are well past that point today. In the last few years we have seen extremely rapid advancement in a series of technologies that have come together to unlock a wave of AI investment. According to Accenture, 85% of executives plan to invest extensively in AI in the next three years, and in the same time period, Forrester estimates that businesses using AI will “steal” $1.2 trillion from companies that don’t.
